Check Tire Pressure Regularly
Your tires lose a little air pressure over time — and even more with temperature changes. Driving with low pressure makes your tires wear out faster, lowers your gas mileage, and can even cause blowouts. Check your tire pressure at least once a month (and before long trips) using a gauge, and always inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (printed on the driver’s side door or in the owner’s manual).
Inspect Tire Tread
Tread is what keeps your vehicle gripping the road in rain and emergencies. Worn-out tread increases your risk of hydroplaning and longer stopping distances. A quick way to check is the penny test: insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down — if you can see the top of his head, your tread is too low, and it’s time for new tires.
Rotate Tires Often
Front and rear tires don’t wear evenly. Rotating your tires every 5,000–7,000 miles helps spread the wear evenly, giving you smoother rides and longer-lasting tires. If you skip rotations, you may need to replace your tires much sooner.
Balance & Align
Even a small imbalance in your tires can cause vibrations in the steering wheel, uneven tread wear, and strain on suspension parts. Balancing ensures each tire spins smoothly. Wheel alignment keeps your car driving straight — if your car pulls to one side or your steering wheel feels crooked, it’s time for an alignment check.
Don’t Ignore Small Issues
A tiny nail, a slow leak, or a bubble on the sidewall may not seem urgent, but these problems can quickly turn into dangerous blowouts at highway speeds. Have your tires patched or replaced as soon as you notice damage — it’s safer and more cost-effective than waiting.
Replace in Pairs or Sets
For stability and safety, it’s best to replace tires in pairs (front or rear) or, ideally, all four at once. Mixing old and new tires can cause uneven handling and reduce traction, especially in wet conditions.
Seasonal Awareness
Florida’s heat is tough on tires. Hot pavement can cause rubber to soften and wear faster, while sudden summer rainstorms make tread depth even more important for traction. Check pressure more often during summer months and make sure your tread is deep enough to handle wet roads.
